Ciego de Avila Cuba

Ciego de Avila is the capital and principal city of Ciego de Avila province.  This market city was founded in 1840 and has a population of abut 85,000.  Located centrally in the province, it is surrounded by flat savana where cattle ranching is the main industry.

The city and provincial name derrives from a forest-fringed savana called a ciego that was originally found on the estate of Jacome de Avila, a Spanish land owner who was granted the land in the mid-1500's.  Originally heavily forested, the land has over the years been cleared for cattle raising.

Our stop in Ciero de Avila was only a brief one, for a rest and a nice lunch of rice and beans, chicken and salad at the ICAP Casa de Amistad (Friendship House).  Afterwards, our group split up with half of the Brigadistas spending the night at the Frienship House while the rest of us got back on the bus for the reaminder of our trip to Cameguey.
