Founded in 1514, the City of Camaguey is Cuba's third largest city with a population of 300,000. The city center was laid out in a confusing irregular way with narrow winding streets to discourage raiders. Nevertheless, Captain Henry Morgan attacked the town in 1668 followed in 1679 by the French buccanneer Francois Granmont.

It's known as the city of the tinajones (pronounced Tee - nah - ho - ness) for the large clay pots that were used to store water and keep it cool in the courtyards of homes. One of Cuba's largest universities, Universidad de Camaguey is located here.. It offers studies in architecture, electrical engineering, veterinary sciences, accounting and economics.
