La Demajagua

Map Reference

Located about 10km south of Manzanillo is the site of the sugar estate of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes. It was here in 1868 that Cespedes freed his slaves and began an armed struggle that led to Cuba's independence from Spain 30 years later.

Hanging within the stone wall is the famous Demajagua bell that was originally used to call slaves to work. On October 10, 1868, it was rung to announce the start of Cuba's struggle for independence.
