On the south side of the plaza is the cathedral Basicilica Metropolitana Santa Ifigenia.
A church has occupied this spot since 1528, though the existing building dates from 1922.
Arriving mid-morning on the express train from
Havana, we left the
modern station
(below)
to find a casa particular since we hoped to spend the day in the city
and catch a bus to Bayamo
the following day.
