Founded in 1689, Santa Clara is located about half way between Havana and Camaguey in the province of Villa Clara. It has a population of about 200,000 and is home to Universidad Central de Las Villas, one of Cuba's most important universities.

Santa Clara is known as Che's city and contains an impressive monument to the fallen revolutionary who led one of the most decisive battles that helped topple the corrupt Batista government.
