A huge bronze statue of an injured Che carrying a machine gun is at the center of the monument. The statue is a representation of Che as he entered Santa Clara for the final battles against the forces of the dictator Batista.

Flanking the statue on one side are rectangular plinths containing words of wisdom from the revolution, and the text of the letter Che sent to Fidel when he left Cuba in 1965. On the other side is a large wall containing scenes from the fight for Santa Clara in 1959, in which Che took the town in what is regarded as the decisive victory of the revolution.
