Cuba by Autobus

As we travelled across the island of Cuba we enjoyed the luxury of air conditioned and comfortable transportation in modern buses owned by Amistur Cuba, an affiliate of ICAP.  These buses took us everywhere... even on one or two rough roads deep into the rural and less travelled areas of Cuba.  Because we were a large delegation of foreign "dignitaries", our bus caravan was always accompanied by a police escort to ensure that no accident would delay us or cause injury.

In some areas, the roads were narrow and winding... and our police escort required that oncoming traffic pull off the road for us.  We felt uncomfortable with this sort of "exclusive" treatment until it was explained to us that if any local traffic were the cause of accident or injury to us as foreigners, the penalties could be very high indeed.  Plus the international publicity would do Cuba no good whatsoever.
