In the parks and along some of the
avenidas in Habana were huge jaguey (banyan) trees with their aerial
roots supporting the branches above the ground. They are often referred to as "the trees that walk" or "the trees of a thousand feet" due to their many roots. So large and so old were some of these trees that they spanned several hundred feet, and their original trunks had long since decayed. The overhead roots were the sole support for the enormous canopy above.
