The final stage of the trek to La Plata involved some very steep climbs on the rough trail. Eventually, the trail let to a small hut known as the guard post. Beyond that, the trail led to a collection of about 9 small buildings nestled under the canopy of large rain forest trees. Because of the climate and the impact of a number of hurricanes that have swept the area in the intervening years, these buildings have been rebuilt to replicate with great accuracy the original buildings that were the command centre of the rebel army in 1957 - 1958. Because of its remoteness and because of the lush tropical forest that completely covered the command centre, it's location was never detected by the forces of Batista.

While primitive in nature, the camp was located close to a good source of water and was equipped with a radio transmitter "Radio Rebelde" which was capable of broadcasting news of the rebel fighting throughout the island.
